In a tragic turn of events on a Saturday afternoon in June 2019, Aaron Washington, a 31-year-old male, was fatally shot in Nashville, Tennessee. The incident, which has been described as an apparent targeted shooting, took place in an alley near 23rd Avenue North and Formosa Street. Washington, a resident of Sylvan Street, was known to frequent the area where the shooting occurred.
Witnesses reported hearing approximately five gunshots before seeing Washington running down Formosa
Street. He was discovered with a gunshot wound to the chest in a nearby yard. Emergency services transported him to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. At the time of the incident, investigators found two of Washington's vehicles parked nearby. He was a father to a young daughter.
The investigation into the shooting was conducted by North Precinct detectives. For several months, the motive behind the killing remained under investigation, and authorities appealed to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest, offering a cash reward through Crime Stoppers.
In March 2020, a breakthrough in the case led to the arrest of 32-year-old Troy Floyd. A grand jury indicted Floyd, charging him with first-degree murder for the fatal shooting of Washington. The investigation, led by North Precinct Detective Thomas Miller, identified Floyd as the alleged shooter. It is believed that the shooting followed an argument between Floyd and Washington, who were acquaintances. It was also noted that Floyd had previous convictions for drug possession.
