On a summer evening in Clarksville, Tennessee, the life of 23-year-old Kendrick Grayer, a male U.S. Army soldier, was cut short. On July 3, 2019, police responded to a call of shots fired on Eighth Street around 11 p.m. and discovered Grayer on a basketball court suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a Nashville hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following day. Grayer, a fire control specialist with the 101st Airborne Division stationed at nearby Fort Campbell, had served in the Army since 2014.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a complex personal conflict leading up to the fatal encounter. According to the testimony of his wife, Erica Grayer, she was present at the basketball court that night. She stated that her husband got into a physical altercation with a man named John Dallen, with whom she had been having a relationship during a troubled period in her marriage. Her account detailed that after Kendrick Grayer pushed Dallen to the ground, Dallen ran off and returned with a group of people. Among them was his close friend, Adriam Hodge. While another individual reportedly held the unarmed Grayer, Hodge allegedly opened fire.
Within two days of the shooting, on July 5, 2019, Clarksville Police Department's Special Operations agents located and arrested 22-year-old Adriam Hodge without incident. He was subsequently charged with criminal homicide for the shooting death of Kendrick Grayer. Hodge, who had a significant criminal history, also faced a multitude of other charges, including drug possession and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The case against him for the murder proceeded to a jury trial in September 2023.
The trial centered heavily on the testimony of Erica Grayer, who was the prosecution's sole eyewitness to the event. The defense scrutinized her initial reluctance to provide information to the police and the nature of her relationship with John Dallen. After a week of testimony, the jury deliberated for less than two hours before reaching a verdict. Adriam Hodge was found not guilty of first-degree murder and was acquitted of the charge.
