On a September morning in 2017, a young Black/African American male named James Scales Jr. was waiting for the school bus just a block from his home in St. Louis, Missouri, when his life was tragically cut short. The 16-year-old was shot multiple times on September 5th. Despite his injuries, he managed to run back to his house, where he collapsed and died in his mother's front room.
His death was not a random act of violence but the final, brutal chapter of a story that began nearly a year earlier when he witnessed the murder of a friend.
In December 2016, James was with his friend Dwayne Clanton when they were confronted by Keith Graham, a young man they knew from school. Graham pulled out a gun and fatally shot Clanton. James did what he believed was right and identified Graham to the police as the shooter, leading to first-degree murder charges against Graham. While incarcerated and awaiting trial, Graham began to orchestrate a plan to silence the key witness against him. From a jailhouse phone, he offered money to have James killed, a desperate attempt to prevent an indictment. The threat against James was real; in February 2017, shots were fired into his home, a clear act of intimidation.
The plot culminated on that September morning. Investigators later determined that two guns were used in the shooting that killed James. Cell phone data placed some of the suspects near the scene of the crime. The fear that had haunted James in the months leading up to his death was so profound that his father later revealed his son knew he was going to die and had even planned his own funeral. The father lamented that his son should have been in protective custody, believing he would still be alive if he had been better protected by the authorities he had aided.
In March 2018, authorities announced a significant breakthrough in the case, charging four men in connection with the murder-for-hire plot. The suspects included Keith Graham, who was charged with a second count of first-degree murder for James's death, as well as conspiracy. His brothers, William Malik Pearson Jr. and Terez Cook Jr., along with a friend, Devion X Gordon, were also charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and armed criminal action. However, the path to justice proved to be complex. In 2022, a jury acquitted Cook, Pearson, and a third man of charges related to James's murder. Keith Graham, the man James had initially identified as a killer, was ultimately convicted of witness tampering and conspiracy to commit murder in the case, receiving a 15-year prison sentence.
