In the winter of 2019, a tragedy unfolded in North Knoxville, Tennessee, forever altering the lives of a local family. On the evening of December 29th, Christian Haley, a 20-year-old male, and his 19-year-old brother, Joshua Haley, were fatally shot inside their residence at the Rocky Top Apartments. The incident, which was reported to authorities around 5:41 p.m., was not a random act of violence.
Investigators quickly determined that the brothers were the victims of a robbery gone
tragically wrong. The perpetrators had targeted the Haleys with the intention of stealing marijuana. During the course of the robbery, a violent confrontation erupted, leading to Christian being shot eight times and Joshua five times. Both brothers succumbed to their injuries at the scene. At the time of his death, Christian's girlfriend was pregnant with their child, who was born a day after his murder.
The Knoxville Police Department's investigation led to the swift identification and arrest of three suspects. James Allen, 33 at the time, and a 17-year-old male were quickly apprehended and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of especially aggravated robbery, and evading arrest. A third suspect, a 16-year-old, was taken into custody a few days later and faced the same charges of first-degree murder and especially aggravated robbery.
In the ensuing legal proceedings, James Allen was convicted by a Knox County jury for his role in the murders. In September 2023, he was sentenced to a 132-year prison term, ensuring he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars. The sentence included consecutive life sentences for the murders of the Haley brothers, amounting to 102 years, with an additional 30 years for other convictions, including the aggravated assault of Christian Haley's pregnant girlfriend. Another of the individuals charged, Anthony Lua, who was 17 at the time of the crime, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 25-year sentence. The case involving the 16-year-old was transferred to be prosecuted in adult court.
