On October 31, 2018, the young man from Sevierville was with friends at a residence on Smith Lane in South Knoxville when the fatal encounter unfolded. The conflict reportedly began earlier in the day and culminated in a violent confrontation.
Four men, identified as Sean Longmire, Elijah Dozard, Bobby Hansard, and Joseph Bellew, drove to the Smith Lane home with the intention of confronting a group of individuals there. Upon their arrival, at least two of the men, including Hansard, brandished handguns and opened fire on the people gathered at the residence. In the ensuing chaos, Bryson McGrotha was struck by a single gunshot to the head and another individual sustained a leg injury.
The Knox County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation that swiftly led to the identification and apprehension of the four men involved.
