Smith was found shot near East 54th Street and Park Avenue and was pronounced dead at the scene. His death marked the 106th homicide in Kansas City that year.
Smith, a father of two, was remembered by his family as a man who loved them dearly. He had recently earned his commercial driver's license permit and was planning to enroll in truck driving school, aspiring to provide a better life for his children. Described by those who knew him as a hardworking and non-confrontational person, his sudden death left his family and community in shock.
