On November 1, 2017, police in Kansas City, Missouri, discovered the body of 34-year-old John C. Jones inside an overturned vehicle near East 16th Street and Lister Avenue. Officers had responded to the area around 5:00 p.m. following reports of a shooting and a subsequent crash. Upon arrival, they found Jones inside the car, which was riddled with bullets. He had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Jones was a male resident of Kansas City who had recently returned to the area after attending high school in Omaha, Nebraska.
Witnesses in the vicinity reported seeing a group of individuals fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. Descriptions provided to law enforcement indicated that three men, possibly juveniles, jumped into a dark blue or black vehicle and sped away north from the wreckage. Police reports later specified that witnesses observed two unknown Black males exit the victim's vehicle before fleeing in the separate getaway car. The investigation suggested that there may have been other individuals inside the car with Jones prior to the incident, though their identities remained unknown.
Jones was a father and a new grandfather who had been working at Tyson Foods and had previously received barber training at Job Corps. Relatives described him as an aspiring rapper who had been working on music with family members. At the time of his death, he was looking forward to celebrating his grandson's first birthday, which occurred just one day after the shooting. His mother, Annetta Authorlee, made public pleas for information, urging anyone who witnessed the crime to come forward to help bring closure to the family.
As of early 2018, no arrests had been made in connection with the murder. Homicide detectives stated they believed there were individuals who had critical information or had witnessed the event but had not yet contacted authorities. A reward was offered for tips leading to an arrest, but the case remained under investigation with police appealing to the community to help identify the suspects responsible for the fatal shooting.
