The final chapter of his life unfolded on the evening of October 11, 2020, at a Red Roof Inn in Knoxville, Tennessee. At around 9:30 p.m., a call about a shooting sent Knoxville Police Department officers to the motel on Central Avenue Pike. There, they found two men who had been shot. John Townsend was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, an employee of the motel, was rushed to the UT Medical Center in critical condition.
Investigators believe that multiple suspects approached a room on the second floor in a possible attempted armed robbery that escalated into violence. The suspects fled before the police arrived, leaving behind a scene that would launch an extensive investigation by the Violent Crimes Unit. Their work led them to identify a primary suspect. The Knoxville Police Department secured warrants for the arrest of 19-year-old Johnathan Davis of Knoxville, charging him with first-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder. As of March 2021, Davis was still at large and considered armed and dangerous, leaving a painful and unresolved conclusion to the sudden and tragic end of John Townsend's life.
