In the early hours of October 24, 2020, the life of 22-year-old Blake Boulton was tragically cut short in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Boulton, a male from Nashville, was discovered inside his 2015 Chevrolet Camaro at the intersection of Stonewall Boulevard and North Tennessee Boulevard, suffering from a gunshot wound. Murfreesboro Police had responded to the scene around 12:50 a.m. after receiving calls about gunshots in the area.
Despite the efforts of personnel from the Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department and Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services, Boulton was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led Murfreesboro Police detectives to identify a suspect. A few months after the shooting, an arrest was made in the case. Cody Gilliam, who was 19 years old at the time the warrant was issued, was taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with the first-degree murder of Blake Boulton.
Following his arrest, Gilliam was indicted by a Rutherford County Grand Jury. The indictment included multiple serious charges in addition to first-degree murder, such as especially aggravated robbery, burglary of a vehicle, possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, and employment of a weapon during the commission of a dangerous felony.
Legal proceedings in the case against Cody Gilliam were scheduled to move forward. A trial was anticipated to take place, with a court date set for February of 2022. Later, a status hearing was scheduled for March of 2023 to determine if both the defense and the prosecution were prepared to proceed to trial. Gilliam remained incarcerated at the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center while awaiting the resolution of his case.
