Corey Wayne Grubbs, a 36-year-old man, was fatally shot on the afternoon of March 8, 2021, in the parking lot of an apartment complex on Union Street in Shelbyville, Tennessee. A graduate of Franklin High School, he was the manager of the local Domino's Pizza, a position he had held since 2009. His death was the result of a murder-suicide perpetrated by 47-year-old John Jaykus.
On the day of the incident, Grubbs had accompanied his co-worker, April Jaykus, to her residence.
As they arrived, her estranged husband, John Jaykus, approached the vehicle. Jaykus opened the passenger door where Grubbs was seated and shot him in the head. After shooting Grubbs, Jaykus turned the gun on himself, sustaining a fatal gunshot wound to the neck.
Witnesses at the scene reported hearing shouting and a loud 'pop.' One witness heard April Jaykus yelling, 'Please stop! Don't!' as she ran from the vehicle with her husband in pursuit. Another witness saw the argument between the three individuals before April Jaykus exited the SUV and her husband shot Grubbs as he was getting out. Law enforcement arrived to find Grubbs in the passenger seat of the SUV and Jaykus's body in the parking lot with a revolver nearby. There were no previous police records involving John Jaykus in Shelbyville or Bedford County.
