In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Nashville, Tennessee, a violent encounter cut short the life of 21-year-old Bobby McGuire. The male victim was fatally shot on May 16, 2021, during an exchange of gunfire outside the Pizzaville Marathon gas station on Trinity Lane. The incident, which unfolded around 2:30 a.m., also resulted in injury to a 34-year-old bystander who was pumping gas at the time.
McGuire was privately transported to a local hospital, but succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation by the Metro Nashville Police Department swiftly led to a suspect. On May 17, 2021, the day after the shooting, 39-year-old Dujuan Marcus Dunlap was taken into custody and charged with McGuire's murder. Investigators determined that Dunlap had fired the first shots in the altercation. In addition to the homicide charge, Dunlap faced a litany of other accusations, including aggravated assault, felony cocaine possession, and gun possession by a convicted felon.
Further investigation into the chaotic scene at the gas station led to a second arrest months later. On October 5, 2021, authorities apprehended 37-year-old Gabrieal Jordan. He was charged with attempted murder for the shooting of the innocent bystander. Evidence connecting Jordan to the crime included a handgun, found during a prior arrest in September, which matched a shell casing recovered from the scene. Surveillance footage from the gas station also identified Jordan as one of the shooters.
Court proceedings that followed revealed more about the fatal confrontation. It was established that while both McGuire and Dunlap discharged firearms, it was Dunlap who initiated the deadly exchange. Despite a claim of self-defense, a court later determined that Dunlap, as a convicted felon unlawfully in possession of a firearm, had a duty to retreat and did not. This led to a denial of his self-defense claim and a conviction related to the events of that night.
