In the early evening of June 8, 2021, 55-year-old Shirley Crawley, an African American woman, was on her way to the grocery store in Nashville, Tennessee. She was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Clarksville Pike and Buena Vista Pike in her white Dodge Challenger, a familiar scene on a typical Tuesday.
