In September 2018, the community of South St. Louis County, Missouri, was shaken by the violent death of 29-year-old Alexander Marley, a dedicated executive chef known for his compassionate nature. Marley, a male resident of the area, was discovered unresponsive in his vehicle in the parking lot of a Walmart store. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
The incident occurred on a Thursday, and by the following morning, his family and employer received the devastating news that the young chef, who was described by those who knew him as a 'Good Samaritan,' had been killed.
Investigators quickly pieced together the events leading to the tragedy, believing that Marley’s kindness may have made him a target. Police theories suggested that he was approached by a stranger at a nearby gas station who asked for assistance. This encounter reportedly led to Marley being followed or accompanied to the Walmart parking lot, where he was robbed and shot. His wallet and cash were missing from the scene. Witnesses in the area reported seeing a man jumping out of the passenger side of Marley’s vehicle as it rolled backward, providing a crucial lead for law enforcement.
Shortly after the murder, St. Louis County police apprehended a suspect, 38-year-old Jesse Michael Kelley. Kelley was arrested on a Saturday, just days after the shooting, and was subsequently held on a $500,000 cash-only bond. Authorities revealed that Kelley had a significant criminal history and had been released from federal prison only months prior to the shooting, after serving a sentence for an arson conviction involving a warehouse in Maplewood.
Following his arrest, prosecutors charged Kelley with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, and two counts of armed criminal action in connection with Marley’s death. During the investigation, detectives also linked Kelley to a separate violent incident that had occurred in the Central West End neighborhood earlier that same week. In that case, he was suspected of kidnapping and robbing a teenager, further highlighting the crime spree that culminated in the senseless loss of Alexander Marley.
