In the spring of 2025, the life of Merlin Esther Cordova Nataren, a 35-year-old woman, was tragically cut short in what police have described as a murder-suicide. Born on January 7, 1990, in Honduras, Nataren was a dedicated mother of three, a devoted wife, and a hardworking individual known for her strength and kindness. She had established a life in Nashville, Tennessee, where she worked in cleaning services and had risen to a managerial position due to her strong work ethic and
leadership.
The sad events unfolded on April 7, 2025, when Nataren's family grew concerned after being unable to contact her since the previous night. Their search led them to the Axis Apartments on Glengarry Drive in South Nashville, the residence of her 27-year-old boyfriend, Jovanni Antonio Machado Portillo. There, they made a devastating discovery. Inside a bedroom, both Nataren and Portillo were found deceased from gunshot wounds.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, the investigation suggests that Portillo shot Nataren multiple times before turning the gun on himself. A handgun was found under Portillo's hand at the scene. Homicide detectives have classified the case as a domestic-related murder-suicide.
