In a tragic turn of events on New Year's Eve 2020, a Nashville community was shaken by the violent death of Demarius Jarrard Scales, a 39-year-old African American man. The fatal encounter unfolded around 2:10 p.m. in the 100 block of Charles Court, where Scales sought to intervene in a domestic dispute. He stepped in to help a girl who was in a physical altercation with a 16-year-old boy, I'yendaye Byrd.
An exchange of words between Scales and Byrd quickly escalated. When Byrd produced a handgun, Scales retreated to his home to arm himself. Upon his return outside, shots were fired, and Scales sustained fatal injuries. The incident, which began as an attempt to de-escalate a conflict, ended in the untimely death of a man described by loved ones as a dedicated father and a pillar of his community.
Responding officers from the Metro Nashville Police Department were able to take I'yendaye Byrd into custody shortly after the shooting. The handgun he allegedly used in the crime was recovered and was later reported to have been stolen from Las Vegas. Following his arrest, Byrd was charged with criminal homicide in connection with the death of Demarius Scales.
