In a tragic turn of events on New Year's Eve 2020, a Nashville community was shaken by the violent death of Demarius Jarrard Scales, a 39-year-old African American man. The fatal encounter unfolded around 2:10 p.m. in the 100 block of Charles Court, where Scales sought to intervene in a domestic dispute. He stepped in to help a girl who was in a physical altercation with a 16-year-old boy, I'yendaye Byrd.
