In the early evening of September 1, 2020, a tragedy unfolded in Nashville, Tennessee, that cut short the life of 35-year-old Michelle Gardner. A Black/African American female, Gardner was seated on the stoop near her apartment at the RiverChase Apartments on Joseph Avenue in the East Nashville neighborhood around 8:30 p.m. It was then that the scene was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
According to witness accounts, multiple gunshots were fired from a nearby parking lot.
The assailants were described as young men dressed entirely in black, who quickly fled the area after the shooting. When the chaos subsided, Michelle Gardner was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. A second individual, a 39-year-old man who was also present, sustained injuries but ultimately survived the attack. It was later determined by investigators that the two victims did not know each other, leaving the intended target of the shooting a lingering question.
Despite the immediate response from law enforcement and an ongoing investigation into the senseless act of violence, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Michelle Gardner.
