Rodrecus Partee, a 29-year-old Black man, was killed late on the night of July 3, 2021, in Memphis, Tennessee, at an airport-area stretch of American Way lined with budget hotels and traffic from I-240. Just after 11 p.m., officers were called to the Americas Best Value Inn at 3685 American Way, where they found him unresponsive with gunshot injuries.
He was pronounced dead at the scene, the kind of death that turns a busy corridor suddenly quiet as patrol cars seal off doorways and flashing lights wash across motel walls.
In the first hours after the shooting, investigators were trying to piece together who had been there and how the violence unfolded. Police initially described suspects fleeing and urged anyone who knew something to come forward, while detectives worked the scene and followed the small trails a murder always leaves behind in a place built for people passing through. What happened in those moments around the hotel became the center of a fast-moving homicide investigation.
Within two days, arrests were announced. Jamal Medlock was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree murder in the perpetration of a robbery. Jer’Miracle Walton was charged with facilitation to commit first-degree murder. A first-degree murder warrant was issued for Gladdaysha Wilson the day after the shooting, and the search for her became a fugitive hunt. On July 7, 2021, she was located in Memphis near the 2900 block of Brunswick Road and taken into custody without incident by a U.S. Marshals task force working the case, bringing another key figure back into the local justice system’s hands.
