In North Memphis, on the evening of March 13, 2025, a burst of gunfire in the 200 block of Chelsea Avenue tragically cut short the life of a man identified as Deonte' Reed. When police arrived at the scene, they found Reed, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Another victim, an unidentified female, was also discovered at the location suffering from a gunshot wound.
The Memphis Police Department immediately launched an investigation into the deadly shooting.
Their efforts led them to identify two suspects in connection with the crime. Warrants were issued for the arrest of Taylor McKinney, 22, and Damarrius Mathis, 20, on charges including first-degree murder and aggravated robbery.
A coordinated effort between the U.S. Marshals Service, the Memphis Police Department, and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Apprehension Team led to the capture of both suspects. Taylor McKinney was apprehended on April 30, 2025, at a residence in the 5900 block of Hickory Hill Square. His bond was set at $1,000,000. Nearly a month later, on May 27, 2025, Damarrius Mathis was located and arrested without incident at a home in the 6000 block of Black Raven Drive. Both men were taken into custody and transported to the Shelby County Jail to face the charges against them.
