On the evening of August 27, 2021, a heated argument in a second-floor hallway of the Hermitage Inn in Nashville, Tennessee, tragically cut short the life of 23-year-old Andre Green. An altercation between Green and an acquaintance escalated into a violent struggle over a firearm. The other man, later identified as 21-year-old Demetrius Blackwell-Esters from Detroit, gained control of the weapon and opened fire on Green.
Even as Green tried to escape the unfolding horror, Blackwell-Esters continued to shoot.
The sounds of gunfire shattered the motel's evening quiet, leaving Green fatally wounded. Witnesses at the scene reported that the two men knew each other, though the exact nature of their relationship and the cause of their dispute were not immediately clear. Homicide detectives were soon on the case, pursuing strong leads to identify and locate the person responsible for Green's death.
Their investigation quickly pointed to Blackwell-Esters as the primary suspect. A nationwide alert was issued, and the search for him extended beyond Tennessee. On September 1, 2021, the efforts of law enforcement paid off when members of the U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force located and arrested Blackwell-Esters in his hometown of Detroit, Michigan. He was subsequently charged with criminal homicide and awaited extradition back to Nashville to face legal proceedings for the death of Andre Green.
