In the early morning hours of June 25, 2022, a sense of weary anticipation hung in the air at the Nashville Greyhound bus terminal. For 23-year-old Jami Jamar Bell, a young father and fiancé from Nashville, the stop was a pivotal point on his journey to visit his daughter. He, along with other passengers, had traveled from Tallahassee, Florida, and were listening to the driver's announcements as the bus came to a halt. Suddenly, the mundane sounds of arrival were shattered by a single gunshot.
Panic erupted as the gunman, a fellow passenger, shouted for people to move out of his way. He scrambled down the aisle and fled the bus, disappearing into the Nashville night towards Division Street. In the chaotic aftermath, it was discovered that Jami Jamar Bell had been fatally wounded. Witnesses later told police that they had not heard any arguments or altercations leading up to the shocking act of violence. The motive for the shooting remained a mystery.
Homicide detectives with the Metro Nashville Police Department immediately launched an investigation. Their efforts to identify the shooter led them to a piece of unclaimed luggage at the bus station. Inside, they found an empty pistol holster. This discovery, combined with other leads, pointed them toward a suspect: 28-year-old Javaris Godfrey, of Florida. On July 7, 2022, authorities located Godfrey at a Nashville homeless shelter.
During questioning, Godfrey admitted to being on the bus and that the luggage belonged to him, but he denied any involvement in the shooting or any knowledge of the empty holster. However, a witness from the bus identified Godfrey as the man who had pushed past passengers while fleeing the scene after the shot was fired. Based on the evidence gathered, Javaris Godfrey was arrested and charged with criminal homicide for the death of Jami Jamar Bell. He is being held at the Metro Jail without bond as the investigation continues.
