In the early morning hours of August 27, 2021, a tragedy unfolded in a Memphis, Tennessee, home that would claim the life of 8-year-old A’layla Bassett. An African American girl, A'layla was in her home on Timothy Drive in the Whitehaven neighborhood when her mother, Ciera Martin, reportedly heard a noise that prompted concern about an intruder. This set in motion a chain of events that would have a devastating conclusion.
A'layla's father, 31-year-old William Oliver, responded to the
potential threat by arming himself and searching the residence. Upon investigating a bedroom closet, he perceived a silhouette moving inside. Believing it to be a burglar, he discharged his firearm. It was only moments later that the horrific realization dawned on him; he had not shot an intruder, but his own young daughter. A’layla was struck in the chest by the bullet.
In the frantic aftermath, A'layla's mother rushed her to Methodist South Hospital. William Oliver followed behind in a separate vehicle with their other four children, who were also present in the house at the time of the shooting. Despite the urgent medical attention she received upon arrival, A’layla Bassett succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
Memphis Police Department officers who responded to the incident detained William Oliver at the scene. While Oliver maintained that the shooting was a tragic accident, a result of mistaken identity in the darkness, law enforcement officials were reportedly skeptical of his account. He was subsequently arrested and charged with reckless homicide in connection with his daughter's death. His bond was set at $112,500. It was also reported that Oliver had a previous charge for aggravated assault from August 2019. The investigation into the shooting continued, but no other suspects were identified.
