In the early hours of a September morning in the Berclair neighborhood of Memphis, the life of 33-year-old Keisha Marshall was tragically cut short. On September 19, 2021, she and her husband, 38-year-old Leander Maxwell, were shot in their bedroom. The couple had reportedly told their roommate, Michael Barkley, that he needed to move out of their Macon Road home by the end of the month.
Awakened by the sound of gunfire, the couple's child tragically witnessed the armed suspect standing
over their mother's body. Despite their injuries, Marshall and Maxwell managed to flee the house. Marshall, however, collapsed on the sidewalk outside. Maxwell was able to make it to a nearby gas station to seek help, but both he and his wife ultimately succumbed to their injuries at a local hospital.
The suspect, 34-year-old Michael Barkley, was apprehended later that same morning at a relative's home. Upon his arrest, a gun was found in his possession. Investigators reported that Barkley confessed to the shooting during questioning.
In February 2022, a Shelby County grand jury indicted Barkley on two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Keisha Marshall and Leander Maxwell. He is being held without bond as he awaits trial for the double homicide.
