On a Monday morning in Memphis, Tennessee, 36-year-old Raven Martin was driving her car, a simple act that tragically turned into her last. It was April 8, 2024, and she was doing a favor for a friend, having just picked him up from the courthouse. In the car with her were her two-year-old son and a male passenger, 27-year-old Antavius Gardner. As they drove near the intersection of Crump and Mississippi Boulevards, their vehicle was suddenly riddled with bullets.
The gunfire was devastating. Antavius Gardner was killed at the scene. Raven Martin, a Black/African American woman and mother of five boys, was critically injured by two bullets but did not die immediately. Her young son was also struck, suffering gunshot wounds to his legs. Emergency services rushed to the scene, transporting Martin to Regional One Health and her son to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. Despite medical efforts, Raven Martin succumbed to her injuries after undergoing surgery. Her mother, Cordia Hunter, later recounted the heartbreak of her daughter going into a second surgery from which she never returned.
The family has expressed their belief that the shooting was a targeted attack, with the male passenger being the intended victim. Described by her mother as a warm person who 'never met a stranger' and always had a big smile, Raven Martin was remembered for her joyful personality. The Memphis Police Department opened an investigation into the double homicide and the injury of the young child. However, as of the latest available information, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and no suspects have been publicly identified.
