In the summer of 2024, the life of 19-year-old Aaliyah Kyles was tragically cut short in her Memphis, Tennessee, apartment. A vibrant and motivated young woman, she had recently moved into her own place at The Boulevard Apartments in Hickory Hill, embarking on a new chapter of independence. Her family described her as a positive person with high energy who could light up a room with her presence.
In the early morning hours of July 9, 2024, the normalcy of the apartment complex was
shattered by the sound of gunshots. Neighbors reported hearing a disturbance and then seeing a man dressed entirely in black fleeing from the area. When police responded to the scene, they found Aaliyah Kyles deceased in the bathtub of her apartment. She had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the homicide led police to a juvenile suspect. The suspect, who was 17 years old at the time of the offense, allegedly broke into Aaliyah's home, sexually assaulted her, and then shot her. During the course of the investigation, he reportedly admitted to the crimes.
The suspect was later identified as Armani Watson. Due to the brutal nature of the crime, the Shelby County District Attorney's Office sought to have him tried as an adult. In December 2025, after he had turned 18, Watson was transferred to adult court to face charges of first-degree murder and rape. A judge set his bond at $1 million. In the wake of their daughter's death, Aaliyah's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the management of The Boulevard Apartments, alleging that inadequate security measures at the complex contributed to the tragedy.
