Deterrio Brown, a 19-year-old Black man from Memphis, was killed on the morning of October 8, 2021, after gunfire erupted outside the Jackson Heights Inn & Suites on Old Austin Peay Highway in the Raleigh area. Police were dispatched to the scene and found him suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead there in the parking-lot chaos. In the first hours after the shooting, investigators said they were looking for a heavyset suspect seen running north toward a nearby gas station as
officers tried to piece together what had just happened.
As the investigation unfolded, officials later described the moments leading up to the killing as an argument that spilled into the open. Prosecutors said Ezekiel McClain confronted Brown outside the motel, and as the dispute escalated, McClain pulled a handgun and shot him. Police and prosecutors stated that McClain later told investigators he fired after being struck in the eye, turning a confrontation into a death in seconds.
The case moved from the street to the courtroom the following summer. On July 14, 2022, the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office announced that a grand jury had indicted McClain on a charge of first-degree murder, and officials said he was being held without bond as the prosecution proceeded.
Away from the headlines, the loss left a hollow space in the life he’d barely begun to build. His obituary described him as Deterrio LaShun Brown, born February 12, 2002, raised in Memphis, connected to church from an early age, and proud of the daughter he loved “unconditionally.” The family gathered to mourn him at the end of October 2021, with visitation and funeral services held at Superior Funeral Home in Memphis, where those who knew him were left to carry his memory while the criminal case advanced on a separate track.
