On a tragic day in Memphis, Tennessee, the life of 16-year-old Demariya Moss was cut short. On March 25, 2023, the young Black male was fatally shot in a townhome located in the Parkway Village neighborhood. The incident unfolded when a man allegedly forced his way into a residence and began shooting. Moss was killed in the gunfire, and two other people present were injured.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify 22-year-old Jaylon Rhodes as the suspect.
According to authorities, Rhodes, the ex-boyfriend of a woman at the townhome, broke in and opened fire. Following the incident, Rhodes was apprehended by law enforcement. He is now facing serious charges, including first-degree murder and attempted murder, for his alleged role in the death of Demariya Moss and the injuries sustained by the other victims.
In the wake of this violent act, the family of Demariya Moss has sought to create a positive legacy in his name. They have organized community events aimed at curbing the gun violence that plagues the city's youth. One such event, called 'Guns Down, Crosses Up,' was held at a local park and featured music, food, and speakers who addressed the urgent need for positive outlets and community engagement to steer young people away from a path of violence.
