In the early morning hours of December 8, 2021, the life of 47-year-old Christopher Lamont Jones, a Black male, was tragically cut short in Nashville, Tennessee. Officers responded to a call and found Jones in a vacant lot on Fain Street, just south of the downtown area, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response from the Nashville Fire Department, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The city was still asleep, but the violence of the act shattered the pre-dawn stillness.
Witnesses in the vicinity reported hearing a barrage of 10 to 15 gunshots, a terrifying sound in the quiet of the night. Shortly after the shots rang out, a distinctive vehicle, a maroon Lincoln Town Car with a broken back window, was seen driving slowly through the area, adding a crucial piece to the burgeoning investigation. Homicide detectives were quick to begin their work, canvassing the neighborhood and piecing together the events that led to Jones's death. The investigation quickly led authorities to a person of interest, Travis Lamont Blakemore, a 37-year-old convicted felon. He was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant, and a search of the maroon Lincoln he was in revealed an AR-15 rifle in the back seat. During questioning, Blakemore reportedly admitted to firing a gun in the direction of a vehicle on a nearby street during the time of the incident. Investigators collected shell casings from the location where Blakemore claimed to have fired his weapon. As a result of these findings, Blakemore was faced with a felony weapon charge.
Despite this development and the strong leads that detectives were pursuing, the motive behind the murder of Christopher Lamont Jones remained elusive. While a person of interest was identified and a weapon was recovered, the specific reasons for the shooting were not made public.
