In the heart of downtown Nashville, a tragic story unfolded in a courtyard outside the Citizen Plaza State Office Building on Deaderick Street. Steven James Godwin, a 35-year-old man, was found deceased on the morning of March 10, 2022, the victim of a fatal shooting that had occurred the evening before. His body was discovered by an individual in a nearby high-rise building who promptly alerted the authorities.
Surveillance footage from the evening of March 9, 2022, captured what
investigators believe were the final moments of Godwin's life. He was seen leaving the WeGo bus station around 6 p.m. in the company of another man, who police have described as an apparent acquaintance. The two walked across the street to the courtyard where an altercation took place, culminating in the gunman opening fire and ending Godwin's life.
In the course of their investigation, the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department identified a person of interest. They publicly named 18-year-old Rodney Catchings as someone they believed to have information regarding the shooting, as he was reportedly in the area at the time. Subsequently, an arrest warrant for criminal homicide was issued for Catchings in connection with Godwin's murder. Law enforcement officials have been actively seeking his whereabouts.
