In the Napier community of Nashville, a sequence of events on a Sunday in late May of 2024 led to the untimely death of Christopher Sayne Brooks. The 32-year-old man, a resident of Nashville, found his life cut short in a violent encounter that unfolded near the intersection of Lewis and Winfrey Streets.
According to accounts pieced together by Homicide Unit detectives who reviewed surveillance footage from the area, Brooks was seen walking along Lewis Street, holding a pistol.
It was then that he engaged in a verbal exchange with another individual. The situation quickly escalated, and gunfire was exchanged between the two. In the ensuing chaos, Brooks was struck by a bullet. Despite his injuries, he managed to flee down Lewis Street before ultimately collapsing. In his final moments, he threw his firearm over a fence, where it landed on the property of the Metro Water Department.
The investigation into the fatal shooting led authorities to a suspect, 45-year-old Calvin W. Kinzer. Detectives from the Specialized Investigations Division TITANS unit apprehended Kinzer at a convenience market on Lebanon Pike. At the time of his arrest, he was found to be in possession of one gun, with a second firearm located in his vehicle. During questioning at police headquarters, Kinzer admitted to his involvement in the shooting. He maintained that his actions were in self-defense, claiming that Brooks had fired his weapon first, compelling him to return fire to protect himself and others in the vicinity.
Following his arrest, Calvin W. Kinzer was booked on a parole violation warrant. Additionally, he faces new charges for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The investigation into the death of Christopher Sayne Brooks is ongoing and will be presented to the District Attorney's Office for review upon its completion.
