In the early evening of May 18, 2022, a sense of normalcy in a Dyersburg, Tennessee shopping center parking lot was shattered by gunfire. When police arrived at the Mall Boulevard location around 7:19 p.m., they discovered 43-year-old Jimmy Lee Burns suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of first responders, Burns was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a long-time mechanic at Tucker Tire, known by friends and family, and his sudden death sent ripples of shock through the community.
Witnesses at the scene were quick to provide investigators with a person of interest, leading them to identify 20-year-old Caleb Edwards. The investigation quickly escalated as authorities also implicated his older brother, 21-year-old William Marcus Edwards, in connection with the fatal shooting. The Dyersburg Police Department launched a search for the two brothers, cautioning the public that they were considered armed and dangerous. Their freedom, however, was short-lived. Just two days after the shooting, both Caleb and William Marcus Edwards were apprehended by law enforcement.
The events leading to the deadly confrontation were later detailed in court. Jimmy Burns had been in the parking lot of The Pet Stop, talking with friends, when the Edwards brothers parked their vehicle next to his. An interaction ensued, with Burns exiting his car and approaching the passenger side where Caleb Edwards was seated. It was at this point that Caleb Edwards raised a gun and fired multiple shots at Burns, inflicting the fatal injuries.
In the aftermath of the arrests, the wheels of justice began to turn. Caleb Edwards faced a charge of first-degree murder, while his brother, William Marcus Edwards, was charged as an accessory to the crime. In July of 2023, just over a year after Jimmy Burns's death, a resolution was reached in the case against the shooter. Caleb Edwards, then 21, was sentenced to 18 years in the Tennessee Department of Corrections for the murder.
