In the early morning hours of May 22, 2022, a sense of unease settled over the Margaret Robertson Apartments in Hermitage, Tennessee. It was there, in the quiet of the parking lot, that 26-year-old Reggae D. Kelly, a Black male, was discovered under grim circumstances. At approximately 5:15 a.m., witnesses came upon Kelly, unconscious and bleeding behind the wheel of a Hyundai Kona SUV.
His life was hanging precariously in the balance from a single gunshot wound to his thigh.
Two other individuals were present at the scene when Kelly was found. In a moment of urgent decision-making, they moved him to the back seat of the vehicle. One of them then took the wheel and rushed Kelly to the nearby Summit Medical Center. However, upon their arrival, the two individuals who transported him did not remain at the hospital to provide information to the authorities. Tragically, the medical intervention was not enough to save him, and Reggae D. Kelly succumbed to his injury.
As detectives began their investigation into the young man's death, the details surrounding the shooting remained murky. A loaded pistol was recovered from near the driver's seat of the Hyundai, adding a layer of complexity to the case. The Metro Police have not classified Kelly's death as a murder, and the possibility that he may have accidentally shot himself has not been dismissed. The investigation is ongoing, and as of now, no arrests have been made, nor have any suspects been publicly identified in connection with the fatal shooting. The case remains an open inquiry as authorities continue to piece together the final moments of Reggae D. Kelly's life.
