In the late evening of June 2, 2022, Robert Scott Meek, a 59-year-old man, was tragically killed while working as a security guard at the Frugal MacDoogal liquor store on Division Street in Nashville, Tennessee. The incident began when Meek confronted a man, later identified as 40-year-old Randy Charles Levi, following an attempted shoplifting inside the store. The confrontation moved to the parking lot and escalated into a physical altercation.
During the struggle, Levi managed to disarm Meek, fatally shooting him with his own pistol.
After the shooting, Levi, still armed with Meek's gun, retreated back into the liquor store. Officers from the Metro Nashville Police Department arrived at the scene within three minutes of the first 911 call. They found Meek on the ground in the parking lot being attended to by a citizen, who informed them that the gunman had gone inside the store. Three officers—Trevor Taylor, Blake Curry, and Steven Luckey—entered the store and located Levi near a cooler in the back.
The officers repeatedly commanded Levi to drop the weapon, but he refused and opened fire on them. Two of the officers returned fire, striking Levi in his extremities. No officers were injured during the shootout. Levi was taken into custody and transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and listed in stable condition.
Following the incident, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called in to lead the investigation into both the fatal shooting of Robert Scott Meek and the officer-involved shooting of Randy Levi. Upon his release from the hospital, Randy Charles Levi was arrested and charged with one count of criminal homicide for the death of Meek and three counts of attempted criminal homicide for firing at the police officers. He was subsequently booked into the Davidson County Jail.
