In the late hours of a Friday night in Madison, Tennessee, a violent encounter at a gas station claimed the life of 28-year-old Courtlyn Hendricks, a Black male. On July 22, 2022, Hendricks and his brother were in two separate red cars at the Mapco on Gallatin Pike South when a gray Nissan Maxima with tinted windows pulled up and blocked their vehicles. Multiple gunshots were fired from the Maxima towards them.
In a desperate attempt to defend themselves, Hendricks and a friend who was with him returned fire at the assailants. The chaotic exchange of gunfire shattered the late-night quiet, after which all three vehicles sped away from the scene. Hendricks, who was wounded in the shootout, was driven to Skyline Medical Center. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Metro Nashville Police Department's Homicide Unit immediately began an investigation into the fatal shooting. Detectives worked to piece together the events of that night and to identify the individuals inside the gray Nissan Maxima. Despite their efforts, the motive behind the shooting remained unclear in the initial stages of the investigation. Law enforcement officials urged anyone with information about the shooting or the whereabouts of the Maxima and its occupants to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers. The case remained an open investigation with no suspects publicly identified or taken into custody.
