While he was on the fourth floor of the building under construction, a series of gunshots shattered the workday calm. A witness at the scene heard the shots and then saw one of Ramirez-Martinez's coworkers fleeing the area.

The individual seen running from the site was identified as 31-year-old Juan Edgardo Izaguerra-Montoya. Investigators learned that Izaguerra-Montoya had come to the construction site around 5 p.m. on his day off. Following the shooting, law enforcement officials quickly began their investigation. Homicide detectives were able to gather information about Izaguerra-Montoya and his white GMC pickup truck, which was relayed to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

A criminal homicide arrest warrant was issued for Juan Edgardo Izaguerra-Montoya on the night of the shooting. He was apprehended later that night by the Tennessee Highway Patrol and Knox County Sheriff's deputies at an interstate weigh station. Izaguerra-Montoya was charged with the murder of Santos Reynario Ramirez-Martinez and booked into the Metro Jail. At the time of his arrest, a motive for the shooting had not been determined by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
