On May 27, 1906, Frank L. Slaymaker, a 24-year-old police officer with the Philadelphia Police Department, was fatally shot while attempting to arrest two suspects for robbing a person in a Chinese restaurant. Officer Slaymaker, who had served with the department for only seven months, was shot by one of the suspects at the corner of 9th Street and Wood Street.
