Special Officer William R. Rank, aged 25, was a member of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Police. On May 15, 1906, while on patrol in the Rutherford rail yard near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Officer Rank attempted to arrest a trespasser. The suspect, identified as a local farmhand, drew a handgun and shot Officer Rank in the neck. Despite being taken to a hospital in Harrisburg, Officer Rank succumbed to his injuries on June 16, 1906.
The suspect fled the scene and was never
apprehended. There were no known arrests, suspects, litigations, or investigations that followed the incident. The case remains unresolved, and the reasons behind the suspect's violent reaction are unknown.
