Special Officer William R. Rank, aged 25, was a member of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Police. On May 15, 1906, while on patrol in the Rutherford rail yard near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Officer Rank attempted to arrest a trespasser. The suspect, identified as a local farmhand, drew a handgun and shot Officer Rank in the neck. Despite being taken to a hospital in Harrisburg, Officer Rank succumbed to his injuries on June 16, 1906.
