In the early morning hours of November 25, 2017, the life of 18-year-old Jashun Patton, a Black male from Philadelphia, was tragically cut short in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Police were dispatched to a residence on the 1800 block of State Street following reports of a man down. Upon their arrival, they discovered Patton inside the home, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.
At the time of his death, Jashun was a promising student and a talented football player for the Boys' Latin of Philadelphia Charter School, where he played as a defensive back. He was visiting his sister in Harrisburg for the Thanksgiving weekend to celebrate his recent college acceptances.
The investigation into Jashun's murder quickly led police to identify a suspect: Derrick Lorenzo Butler. An arrest warrant was issued, charging Butler with murder and illegal possession of a firearm. It was reported that the shooting occurred inside the residence during a gathering. Authorities stated that Butler was the individual who shot and killed Jashun. Following the incident, Butler was believed to have fled the Harrisburg area, prompting a search by law enforcement.
Derrick Lorenzo Butler was later apprehended and faced legal proceedings for the murder of Jashun Patton. He was ultimately convicted of third-degree murder for the shooting. The court sentenced Butler to a term of 25 to 50 years in prison for his role in Jashun's death. The senseless act of violence left a community and a family mourning the loss of a young man with a bright future ahead of him.
