Albert Joseph Izzo, a 35-year-old male of Italian ethnicity, was a Pennsylvania State Trooper who tragically lost his life on June 13, 1979, in New Castle, Pennsylvania. Trooper Izzo was born on November 6, 1943, and had served with the US Marine Corps before joining the Pennsylvania State Police in 1971. He was part of the Region IV Strike Force and had nearly eight years of service with the state police.
On the night of his death, Trooper Izzo was involved in a raid on a New Castle home as part of a drug investigation. The raid was a prearranged drug purchase operation, and the detail included assistance from police in Youngstown, Ohio. During the raid, an exchange of gunfire occurred, and Trooper Izzo was mortally wounded. He was taken to St. Francis Hospital in New Castle, where he succumbed to his injuries at 5:30 a.m.
Following the incident, Joseph Querriera, 28, and Floyd Monaco, 29, both of New Castle, were arraigned on charges of murder and criminal homicide. Additionally, Gary Perretta, 26, and Joseph Frank, 29, were charged with possession of controlled substances with intent to sell or deliver. A female juvenile was also taken into custody in connection with the case.
Trooper Izzo was buried with full military honors at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Bessemer, Lawrence County. He is remembered for his dedication and sacrifice in the line of duty, and his memory continues to be honored by his family, friends, and fellow officers.
