On February 8, 1992, Patrolman Michael D. Love, aged 28, of the Rochester Borough Police Department in Pennsylvania, was tragically shot and killed while attempting to intervene in a murder. Patrolman Love was off duty at the time, patronizing a restaurant at 523 Virginia Avenue when a man who had been stalking his estranged wife entered the establishment and fatally shot her. Hearing the gunshot, Patrolman Love courageously attempted to take action against the suspect but was shot and killed in the process.
The suspect was apprehended and subsequently sentenced to death. He remained on death row until his death in prison in March 2012. Patrolman Love had served with the Rochester Township Police Department for nine years and was survived by his parents, sister, and two brothers.
Patrolman Love's death was a stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face, even when off duty. His bravery and self-sacrifice were honored by his fellow officers, family, and the community. He is remembered as a true hero who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
