In the autumn of 2001, the life of 18-year-old Darrell James Dickerson Jr., a male of African American ethnicity, was cut short on the streets of Erie, Pennsylvania. On October 3, 2001, in what was described as a robbery gone wrong, Dickerson was fatally shot. The incident unfolded in the 500 block of West 17th Street, where a group of men, including a 17-year-old named Mack D'Juan Hill, had planned to rob him.
