In the summer of 2015, the life of 16-year-old Shakur Omarr Franklin was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Erie, Pennsylvania. On the night of Saturday, July 25, 2015, Franklin was at a party when gunfire erupted from a passing SUV. He was struck and fatally wounded, and four other people were injured in the chaotic scene. Franklin was rushed to UPMC Hamot, but tragically succumbed to his injuries. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on March 4, 1999.
The investigation into the shooting led to the arrest of four young men: Keshawn McLaurin, Jahaun Jones, Demond Mitchell, and Stephen Russell. The prosecution built a case alleging that these individuals were in the SUV and responsible for the drive-by shooting that claimed Franklin's life. The subsequent legal proceedings brought some measure of justice, though not without complexities and acquittals.
In January 2018, the case went to trial. During the proceedings, a judge acquitted Jahaun Jones and Stephen Russell after a key prosecution witness failed to appear in court. The jury then deliberated for nearly seven hours before reaching a verdict for the remaining two defendants. Keshawn McLaurin, who was 20 years old at the time of the trial, was convicted of first-degree murder for his role in the death of Shakur Franklin. His lawyer acknowledged that McLaurin was present at the scene but maintained he was not involved in the shooting. The jury, however, found him guilty. In contrast, Demond Mitchell, then 21, was acquitted of the charges against him. Three of the defendants had maintained their innocence, stating they were not at the scene of the crime.
