Eric Faleef Caldwell, a 36-year-old male of African American ethnicity, tragically lost his life on May 23, 2007, in Chester, Pennsylvania. Caldwell was fatally shot on the 300 block of Patterson Street following a dispute with two men, James Armstrong and Rashad Ishmail, outside the Fifth Street Bar in Chester. Witnesses reported seeing Armstrong and Ishmail chasing Caldwell and firing multiple rounds at him.
James Armstrong, 27, and Rashad Ishmail, 31, both of Chester, were arrested
and charged with first-degree murder and related offenses. According to testimony, Armstrong confessed to the murder to a witness in August 2007. The trial revealed that Caldwell was shot multiple times from behind, and ballistics testing linked the shell casings to a weapon found near the scene.
In March 2012, Armstrong was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Ishmail, however, was cleared of first- and third-degree murder charges. The court noted that despite the lack of certain evidence, the prosecution was able to prove Armstrong's guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case also highlighted the challenges faced by the prosecution, including the intimidation and death of potential witnesses. Despite these obstacles, the jury found Armstrong guilty, and he received an additional three and a half to seven years for illegally possessing a firearm.
