In a tragic turn of events stemming from a domestic dispute, 32-year-old Grant L. Bowers died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after shooting his estranged wife in Springhill Township, Fayette County. The incident unfolded at a residence on Morgantown Road where his 33-year-old wife, Joni Ann Bowers, had been staying with her parents following the couple's separation about three weeks prior.
On the evening of the incident, Grant Bowers arrived at the home wanting to speak with his
wife. An argument ensued between the two, escalating to a violent confrontation. During the dispute, Grant Bowers produced a handgun and shot Joni Bowers multiple times in the chest and throat. The victim's mother was alerted by the commotion and came downstairs to find her daughter being assaulted. After shooting his wife, Grant Bowers fired at his mother-in-law as she attempted to flee for help, but he missed. He then turned the weapon on himself, sustaining a fatal head wound.
Law enforcement and emergency services were dispatched to the scene. Grant Bowers was pronounced dead at the location. Joni Bowers was transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, where she underwent surgery and was listed in critical but stable condition. She was expected to survive her injuries. The couple's 5-year-old daughter was present in the house during the entire ordeal but was unharmed. Family members reported that Joni Bowers had been fearful of her husband and had unsuccessfully attempted to obtain a protection from abuse order the week before the shooting, as the threats had been verbal and not physical at that point. The investigation into the attempted murder-suicide was handled by the state police.
