Maria Ester Armayrany Moreno Sanchez was a 32-year-old mother of three and the wife of Gustavo Guzman Grajales. Together, they were raising their children in a home they shared with other family members in San Benito, Texas. Their lives were tragically cut short in a violent attack that also claimed the lives of two other relatives and left their three young children orphaned.
The night of Saturday, September 12, 2026, the family had been celebrating Gustavo's birthday.
In the early hours of September 13, the celebration turned into a scene of unimaginable horror. A man who had been living with the family for four years, Christian Joel Maldonado Pacheco, 25, began a shooting rampage that would end four lives. According to court documents, Pacheco, a Honduran national, had been out drinking with one of the victims, 50-year-old Donaciano Guzman Vargas. An argument erupted on the drive home, during which Pacheco claimed Vargas was "talking down to him." Pacheco shot Vargas and left his body on Russell Lane.
Pacheco then returned to the family's residence in the 32000 block of Road 819. He went to the bedroom where Maria and her husband Gustavo, 29, were in bed. He opened fire, killing Gustavo. When Maria screamed in horror at witnessing her husband's murder, Pacheco shot and killed her as well. The couple's two-month-old baby was sleeping in a bassinet nearby, and spent casings were later found on it. Their two other children, ages four and eight, were in another room.
The carnage did not end there. After shooting the couple, Pacheco picked up the infant and took her to the other children's room, telling them everything was okay. As he was leading the children out of the house, he was confronted by another family member, 67-year-old Leticia Vargas Fernandez, whom he had previously described as a mother figure. While still holding the baby, Pacheco shot and killed Fernandez as the other two children walked in front of him.
In a chilling turn of events, Pacheco himself called 911 at approximately 3:18 a.m. to report that he had just killed his family. Dispatchers who remained on the line could hear children crying and even gunshots during the call. Pacheco told them he had used a Glock handgun and was about to shoot another person he referred to as "Ma." When deputies from the Cameron County Sheriff's Office arrived, they found Pacheco outside the home with the three children, who were physically unharmed. He was taken into custody without incident.
Investigators from the Cameron County Sheriff's Office arrested Pacheco, who confessed to the killings. He claimed his motive was that he was "tired of being bullied," though Sheriff Manuel Treviño stated there was no evidence to corroborate that claim. Pacheco was charged with capital murder of multiple persons and three counts of child endangerment or abandonment. A judge denied him bond, deeming him a flight risk and a danger to the community. As of September 2026, he remained in custody at the Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center awaiting trial.
The murders of Maria, Gustavo, Donaciano, and Leticia devastated their family, friends, and the San Benito community. A relative organized an online fundraiser to help with funeral costs for the victims. The case left behind not only profound grief but also the pressing question of what would become of the three young children who witnessed the destruction of their family.
