Summary based on 4 sources
A kind and caring woman who treated a young man in need like her own son, Leticia Vargas Fernandez was remembered as the matriarch of her family. The 67-year-old woman, a resident of San Benito, Texas, had opened her home about four years earlier to Christian Joel Maldonado Pacheco, a 25-year-old from Honduras. Her daughter, Alba Cortez, said her mother offered him a room when he came looking for help, and over time, he became part of their family gatherings. Leticia lovingly referred to him as her son, and he called her "Ma."

The trust and familial bond were shattered in the early morning hours of Sunday, September 13, 2026. The night began as a celebration for another family member's birthday. Later, Maldonado Pacheco and another victim, Donaciano Guzman Vargas, went to a bar. According to a probable cause affidavit, an argument erupted between the two on the way home when Vargas, who was driving, got lost. Maldonado Pacheco told investigators that Vargas "was talking down to him," saying he was worthless, which made him angry. He then shot and killed Vargas in the middle of a dark road and left his body there.

Maldonado Pacheco then returned to the family's home in the 32000 block of County Road 819. Once inside, he went to the bedroom of Gustavo Guzman Grajales and Maria Ester Amayrany Moreno Sanchez and shot them as they slept in their bed. Their three young children, ages nine, four, and two months, were in the home at the time. After killing the couple, Maldonado Pacheco gathered the children, including the infant who had been sleeping in a bassinet next to the couple's bed.

As he was leading the children out of the house, Leticia emerged from her bedroom and confronted him. In that moment, while holding the baby and with the other two children just steps away, Maldonado Pacheco shot and killed the woman who had treated him like a son. He then walked outside with the children, handed the infant to the nine-year-old, and at approximately 3:18 a.m., he called 911 to report that he had just killed his family with a Glock handgun. Dispatchers reported hearing gunshots and children crying during the call.

When deputies from the Cameron County Sheriff's Office arrived, they found Maldonado Pacheco outside the residence with the three unharmed children. Inside, they discovered the bodies of Grajales, Sanchez, and Leticia Vargas Fernandez. The body of Donaciano Guzman Vargas was found by motorists on Russell Lane near San Benito. Maldonado Pacheco was taken into custody and, according to Sheriff Manuel Treviño, provided a full confession to the four murders. He claimed he was "tired of being bullied," a motive investigators were still looking into.

Christian Joel Maldonado Pacheco was charged with four counts of capital murder of multiple persons and three counts of abandoning and endangering a child. A judge denied him bond, citing him as a flight risk and a danger to the community, as authorities stated he was in the country illegally. He remains held at the Cameron County Carrizales-Rucker Detention Center.

The violent loss of Leticia and her family members left her daughter, Alba Cortez, searching for answers. "We want justice," she said in an interview. "We want all of this to be cleared up, so we can find out what the motive was — or the reason — why he changed so much toward her." The case is currently proceeding through the court system as of September 2026.
