In the quiet of a Sunday evening in Grant Township, Indiana County, a verbal dispute between neighbors escalated into a fatal encounter. The life of David Ackerson, a 51-year-old male, was cut short on May 26, 2014, following a heated argument that turned deadly. The disagreement began near Ackerson's home on Buterbaugh Road, where he and 59-year-old James Buterbaugh exchanged words.
Following the initial confrontation, Buterbaugh retreated to a nearby gas well road, but the conflict was
far from over. Ackerson followed him to the new location and approached him. It was there that Buterbaugh, after warning Ackerson to leave and stating his intention to shoot, discharged a firearm. The shot struck Ackerson, who was then rushed to Indiana Regional Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement took James Buterbaugh into custody. He was subsequently charged with a range of serious offenses, including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and recklessly endangering another person. Following his arrest, Buterbaugh was detained in the Indiana County Jail.
