In the cool of a late September evening in 2014, the life of Jermaine Oden, a 39-year-old Black male from Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, was tragically cut short on a street in McKeesport. On Tuesday, September 23rd, at approximately 10:10 p.m., police responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of 9th and Locust Streets. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Oden suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators with the Allegheny County Police believe that just prior to the fatal shooting, Mr. Oden had been involved in an altercation with another man. This dispute is thought to have escalated, culminating in the gunfire that ended Mr. Oden's life just days after he had celebrated his 39th birthday. Friends and family, who had recently filled his social media with birthday wishes, were suddenly posting messages of grief and condolence.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials appealed to the public for assistance. They urged anyone who may have seen or heard anything in the vicinity of the intersection around the time of the incident to come forward with information.
