A mother of five is found murdered in Grand Rapids
In the winter of 1996, a 26-year-old Caucasian woman named Dawn Phillips vanished from Grand Rapids, Michigan. A mother of five young daughters, she was last seen on the evening of January 19, 1996. After giving two of her daughters a bath, she told them she was making a quick trip to a nearby corner store and would be right back. Her children waited, but their mother never returned home. For months, her disappearance remained a mystery, leaving her family in a state of agonizing uncertainty.
The grim reality of Dawn's fate was discovered ten months later, on October 1, 1996. A group of children walking in a wooded area in Plainfield Township, in the 600 block of Canright Street NE, stumbled upon human remains. Dental records would later confirm the body was that of Dawn Phillips. An autopsy determined her death was a homicide, though the exact cause remained unknown. Her case cast a dark shadow over the Grand Rapids community, as it was one of seventeen unsolved murders or disappearances of women that occurred in the area during the mid-1990s, creating a palpable sense of fear and the suspicion of a serial killer at large.
For over two and a half decades, Dawn Phillips' murder remained a cold case, a source of enduring pain for her loved ones. The trail for her killer seemed to have gone cold, and with each passing year, the hope of finding answers dwindled. However, a significant breakthrough in another of the seventeen cold cases would ultimately shed light on Dawn's murder. In 2022, advancements in forensic genetic genealogy led to the arrest of Garry Dean Artman, a long-haul truck driver in his sixties, for the 1996 rape and murder of another Grand Rapids victim, Sharon Hammack. Artman was subsequently convicted of Hammack's murder and sentenced to life in prison.
The final, chilling chapter of this story unfolded in December 2023. Garry Artman, succumbing to terminal lung cancer in a prison hospital, made a series of deathbed confessions to investigators. He admitted to being responsible for a total of eleven murders, ten of which took place in the Grand Rapids area during the same period that Dawn Phillips was killed. While law enforcement has not officially released a complete list of the victims Artman confessed to killing, some sources have indicated that Dawn Phillips was among them. Though he was never formally charged with her murder, his confession has brought a long-awaited, albeit somber, sense of resolution to the family of Dawn Phillips and the community that was haunted by her unsolved death for so many years.
