In the summer of 2015, a young mother's life was tragically cut short in what should have been the safety of her Port Richmond home in Philadelphia. Stephanie Dzikowski, a 22-year-old white female, was found deceased on the evening of July 30, 2015. She had been shot once in the head in her upstairs bedroom. The discovery was made after her longtime boyfriend returned from a brief trip to a nearby store to buy milk.
In the house at the time of the incident was the couple's two-year-old daughter, who was thankfully unharmed.
The initial investigation left the community and law enforcement puzzled, with no immediate suspects. A man in a hooded sweatshirt was seen fleeing the area, but his identity remained unknown. For over a year and a half, the case grew cold, leaving Stephanie's family, including her father with whom she and her daughter lived, in a painful state of uncertainty. The family actively sought answers, holding rallies to keep Stephanie's memory alive and to appeal for information from the public.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in early 2017. After a segment detailing the investigation and previously unreleased surveillance footage aired on a crime television show, the Philadelphia Police Department's homicide unit received several crucial tips. This new information led them to a suspect who was already incarcerated for an unrelated offense. In February 2017, police arrested 28-year-old James Jones, a homeless man, and charged him in connection with Stephanie's death. Investigators believe Jones had been lurking outside the residence and entered with the intent to rob when he saw Stephanie's boyfriend leave.
James Jones was subsequently convicted of third-degree manslaughter for the death of Stephanie Dzikowski. The resolution of the case brought a measure of closure to a family and community that had been deeply affected by the senseless act of violence that took the life of a young woman who had just begun her career as a dental technician and was lovingly raising her young daughter.
