Do you know who murdered Franchesca Alvarado? Franchesca “Cheka” Alvarado was a 22-year-old woman from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, whose life was centered on her young daughter, Janiah, and on trying to build a steadier future. In March 2012, she was living in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia and preparing to take criminal justice classes at Community College of Philadelphia. Her family described her as bright, funny, close to her siblings, and deeply connected to her child, which is why her sudden silence after a short trip to
Atlantic City immediately felt wrong to the people who knew her best.
On St. Patrick's Day weekend in 2012, Franchesca arranged care for her 3-year-old daughter and traveled to Atlantic City with an older acquaintance, Tracy Williams. Some accounts say Williams went with his children as well. Franchesca was expected back quickly, but she never returned to Philadelphia and stopped communicating with her family. Her family said she was not the type to disappear without warning, especially while separated from her daughter and with plans for school ahead of her.
When relatives went looking for answers, one of the first confusing details came from Franchesca's roommate, who reportedly said Franchesca had gone to Atlantic City and would be away for two weeks. Her family found that unbelievable. They knew Franchesca would not have left for that long without telling them or making clear plans for Janiah. Tracy Williams later told investigators that Franchesca left the hotel room around 2 a.m. or separated from him during the night, and that she said she would find her own way back to Philadelphia. Other reports place her last known area near Resorts Casino Hotel or the Borgata in Atlantic City.
Her family filed a missing person report and began doing much of the searching themselves. They handed out flyers, organized rallies, contacted shelters and hospitals, and walked the Atlantic City boardwalk looking for anyone who might have seen her. They believed the early response treated Franchesca as someone who had left voluntarily, while her family insisted that did not fit her life, her habits, or her devotion to her daughter.
For roughly 18 months, there were no answers. Then, in August 2013, a fisherman found a foot inside an Adidas high-top sneaker at Corson's Inlet State Park in Ocean City, New Jersey, miles from where Franchesca had last been seen. Her siblings recognized the shoe, and DNA testing later confirmed the remains were Franchesca's. More remains were later recovered, including a femur and tibia, but much of her body was never found. Her family never received a clear cause of death.
Franchesca's recovered remains were eventually laid to rest in April 2016 at Greenmount Cemetery, in the same plot as her mother, who had died when Franchesca was a child. The burial gave the family a place to mourn, but it did not answer what happened between the night Franchesca left the hotel and the day her remains began washing ashore.
No arrests have been reported in Franchesca Alvarado's death, and no one has been charged. Tracy Williams was questioned and has remained a central figure in public accounts because he was the person who took her to Atlantic City and returned without her. Reports also say he refused a lie detector test. Franchesca's roommate was also questioned and was described by family or secondary accounts as uncooperative. Her former boyfriend has been mentioned in some coverage because of concerns from the family and because he was later imprisoned on unrelated charges, but there has been no public report that he was charged in connection with Franchesca's disappearance or death.
The case remains unresolved. Investigators have treated it as a cold case, and Franchesca's family has continued asking for information, believing someone knows how a quick holiday weekend trip became the final chapter of Cheka's life.
